2022-2023 EMF Grantees

Joby Thoppil, MD
Early Career Research Development Grant

Dr. Thoppil was awarded the Early Career Research Development Grant for $150,000 over two years. He will work on his project titled, “Role of Norepinephrine in Regulating Oxidative Metabolism in Sepsis” at UT Southwestern Medical Center.

Jonathan J. Oskvarek, MD, MBA
EMF/EMPI Health Policy Research Scholar Grant

Dr. Oskvarek was awarded the EMF/EMPI Health Policy Research Scholar Grant for $100,000 over one year. He will work on his project titled, "An Evaluation of an ED Alternative Payment Model Involving a Private Insurer on Admission Rates and CT Scans" at Summa Health.

Anish Agarwal, MD, MPH, MS
EMF Emergency Physician Wellness Grant

Dr. Agarwal was awarded the Emergency Physician Wellness Grant for $50,000 over one year. He will work on his project titled, “Investigating Proactive, Digital Methods to Identify Signs and Symptoms of Mental Health Distress in Emergency Medicine Physicians” at the University of Pennsylvania.

Danielle Cullen, MD, MPH, MSHP
EMF Health Diversity, Inclusion and Equity Grant

Dr. Cullen was awarded the EMF Health Diversity, Inclusion and Equity Grant for $50,000 over one year. She will work on her project titled, “Socially Equitable Care by Understanding Resource Engagement (SECURE): A Mixed-Method Evaluation of the Impact of Social Risk Screening or a Resource Menu on Uptake of Social Assistance” at the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia and the University of Pennsylvania.

Stephanie Eucker, MD, PhD
EMF Pilot Research Grant

Dr. Eucker was awarded the EMF Pilot Research Grant for $50,000 over one year. She will work on her project titled, “Pilot Study of Multimodal Cognitive Behavioral Therapy-Informed Physical Therapy in the Management of Neck and Back Pain in the Emergency Department (Multi-ED)” at Duke University.

Jin Han, MD, MSc
Pilot Research Grant

Dr. Han was awarded the EMF Pilot Research Grant for $50,000 over one year. He will work on his project titled, "RSI - Pilot to Study Psychological Distress (RSI-PTSD)" at Vanderbilt University Medical Center.

Michael Monuteaux, ScD
Pilot Research Grant

Dr. Monuteaux was awarded the Pilot Research Grant for $50,000 over one year. He will work on his project titled, “Evaluation of insurance type as a proxy for patient-level socioeconomic status in the pediatric emergency department ” at Boston Children's Hospital.

Laura Hopson, MD
EMF/CORD Emergency Medicine Education Research Grant

Dr. Hopson was awarded the EMF/CORD Emergency Medicine Education Research Grant for $25,000 over one year. She will work on her project titled, “Creating a Behavioral Definition of a Master Adaptive Learner for Emergency Medicine” at the Regents of the University of Michigan.

Petra Duran-Gehring, MD
EMF/CORD Emergency Medicine Education Research Grant

Dr. Duran-Gehring was awarded the EMF/CORD Emergency Medicine Education Research Grant for $24,300 over one years. She will work on his project titled, “Bridging the Gap: Interactive Virtual Training for Ultrasound Image Acquisition” at the University of Florida- Jacksonville.

Andrew Ketterer, MD, MA
EMF/CORD Emergency Medicine Education Starter Grant

Dr. Ketterer was awarded the EMF/CORD Emergency Medicine Education Starter Grant for $10,000 over one year. He will work on her project titled, “A simulation-based randomized controlled trial on teaching best practices in firearm safety” at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center.

Aneeqah Naeem, BA
EMF/SAEMF Medical Student Research Grant

Ms. Naeem was awarded the EMF/SAEMF Medical Student Research Grant for $5,000 over one year. She will work on her project titled, “Feasibility and Barriers to Implementation of an Emergency Department Community Health Worker-Peer Recovery Specialist Program for Patients with Substance Use Disorders ” at Brown University.

Sara Lin
EMF/SAEMF Medical Student Research Grant

Ms. Lin was awarded the EMF/SAEMF Medical Student Research Grant for $5,000 over one year. She will work on her project titled, “Examining Insurance Status and Presentation to Percutaneous Coronary Intervention Capable Facility for Patients with ST-Elevation Myocardial Infarction” at the Vanderbilt University School of Medicine.

Grant McDaniel, MS
EMF/SAEMF Medical Student Research Grant

Mr. McDaniel was awarded the EMF/SAEMF Medical Student Research Grant for $5,000 over one year. He will work on his project titled, “Using Simulation to Assess Bag Valve Mask Performance in Stressed Emergency Medicine Residents and Physicians” at the University of Toledo.

Sarah Follman, MD
EMF/NIDA Mentor-Facilitated Training Award

Dr. Follman was awarded the EMF/NIDA Mentor-Facilitated Training Award in Substance Use Disorders Science Dissemination for $12,000 over one year. She will work on her project titled, "STIGMAS: Stigma Training In Graduate MedEd Addressing Substance Use" at the University of Chicago.

Dr. Laura Checkley
EMF/NIDA Mentor-Facilitated Training Award

Dr. Checkley was awarded the EMF/NIDA Mentor-Facilitated Training Award in Substance Use Disorders Science Dissemination for $12,000 over one year. She will work on her project titled, "Enhancing Care for Emergency Department Patients with Fentanyl Use Disorder" at the University of California, San Francisco.
